In this guide

A useful keyword list ends with a decision: which existing page should answer the search, and what needs to improve there?

01

Start with the work you can deliver

List the trades you actually deliver before collecting keywords. A multi-trade operator needs separate service ownership; a single-trade business should not target every example in a home-services list. Record exclusions, call-handling hours, travel limits and whether the team can accept more of each type of work.

For each service, record what the customer is trying to achieve, where you can deliver it, who handles the enquiry and which existing URL explains it. Mark unsupported services as excluded. This prevents a large keyword export from becoming a production list by default.

02

Group keywords by the customer’s task

Use these patterns as research seeds. They are illustrative examples, not measured search volumes, ranking promises or universal buying-intent tiers. Replace location placeholders with the market being researched; do not paste placeholders into published copy.

Intent Example query What the page should answer Commercial filter
Urgent service emergency plumber [city] Availability and a contact route Only if the business actually provides that response
Planned replacement roof replacement [city] Scope, evidence and an estimate Match the service and delivery capacity
Specific repair AC repair [city] A relevant service explanation Differentiate the trade and equipment
Specialist capability tankless water heater installer Relevant experience and service scope Do not imply unheld certifications
Price research drain cleaning cost [city] Pricing factors or verified business prices Separate research from readiness to book
Local provider electrician near me Provider selection and practical details A modifier is not an instruction to create a city page

03

Collect evidence before assigning priority

Build one worksheet with a trade column before combining exports. Tag plumbing, heating/cooling, electrical and other services separately, then add the customer task and existing owner URL. Keep queries for trades the business does not perform in an exclusion list so they do not return as apparent content gaps.

Use Search Console to inspect queries for each trade’s service pages, then check which other pages appear for the same wording. Record the period and market; site-wide totals cannot resolve ownership. Add language from qualified and rejected calls to understand whether the visibility matches the operation.

Keyword tools and current local results can help expand the list, but preserve the source, date and location beside estimates. A cross-trade spreadsheet should not flatten every search into the same urgency tier. Leave lead value and backlink fields unknown until actual evidence is available.

04

Worked example: “drain cleaning [city]” and “blocked drain service [city]” may belong to the existing drain-cleaning service page. Confirm the search task and existing site content before making that decision.

Explain service scope, coverage, price factors and the booking step on the existing page. Retain a separate sewer-repair page only where its service and customer decision are distinct.

For each cluster, choose improve existing page, support it with a section, investigate a separate task, or exclude. Similar wording alone is not proof of cannibalisation. If two URLs appear for the same cluster, compare their intent, query ownership and links before considering structural action. This guide does not recommend automatic merges or redirects.

Record Decision to make
Customer task What does this person need to decide?
Existing owner Which current page best answers it?
Evidence gap What information or proof is missing?
Next action Improve, investigate or exclude—with a reason

The examples describe a planning method. They do not require new routes or a fixed number of pages.

05

Keep the cross-trade framework separate from trade advice.

The home-services parent explains the managed commercial strategy. This guide owns the research method across trades. A plumbing keyword guide owns plumbing examples and decisions; it should not be duplicated here at full length. On a contractor website, apply the same discipline: a broad service overview introduces the offer, while an existing focused service page answers the detailed service task.

06

Prioritise the likely improvement, then measure progression

Prioritise a service cluster only after confirming trade fit, coverage and response capacity. Compare observed exposure and ranking proximity with the weakness of the existing page. A broad “home services” page may introduce the business, but it should not compete with every detailed service page for the same task.

Track suitable enquiries by trade and by existing destination page where possible. An increase in electrical enquiries is not a success for a business that only handles plumbing. After authorised publication, compare equivalent windows and inspect query/page pairs before attributing a change to the rewrite.

Keep a before record of the URL, title, content, canonical and performance. Improve scope, evidence and the enquiry step in place. Reassess priorities when the business adds a trade, changes coverage or no longer has capacity for a service.

Common questions

How many keywords or pages should we target?

There is no useful universal quota. Start with distinct services and customer tasks, group related wording and assign existing owner pages. A large list of variations can map to a small set of useful pages.

Should every “near me” or city variation get its own page?

No. Check the customer task, actual coverage and current page first. A location modifier alone does not justify another URL, and listing an area does not guarantee a ranking there.

What if we have no query-level performance or lead data?

Keep the research provisional. Use confirmed service fit and the current page’s weaknesses to choose an editorial improvement, then collect the missing evidence. Do not present estimated demand or unknown enquiries as measured return.
